Witnesses to the Kingdom: The Martyrs of El Salvador and the Crucified Peoples

Witnesses to the Kingdom: The Martyrs of El Salvador and the Crucified Peoples - Sobrino Amazing. Sobrino's linking of martyrdom and liberation; his critique of churches seeking comfort rather than necessary conflict; his summary of the "Church of the Poor" - all challenged my North American faith. He contends that failure to stand in solidarity with the poor explains church decline. Has the UMC become "unreal" in that we don't face the world as it is - a place of suffering and injustice? While preaching the kingdom of justice and utopia, do we fail to challenge the anti-kingdom of oppression and greed? I think Sobrino's on to something here. In a short time, he's become a very important dialogue partner for me. I look forward to learning more from him.

For those looking for an easy read, this book is not for you. Sobrino drops plenty of Latin words and phrases without defining them. Consider investing in a Latin to English dictionary to make your reading of Sobrino more enjoyable.
