The Paper Menagerie

The Paper Menagerie - Ken Liu Oh for Pete's sake! Why did I read this tear-jerker over lunch at the office? A beautifully-written fantasy about miscommunication, family origins, culture clashes, modern slavery, racism, and the stubbornness of a mother's unreturned love. Liu's very deserving of his 2011 Nebula Award for this short story. Betcha get misty-eyed!
